Camera Features

The camera which we are using to film with is the Sony Handy-cam DCR-DVD92e. This camera comes with basic features but it has a good quality of filming. Some of these features are:

  •  Zoom
  • A back light
  • A built in speaker
  • Microphone
  • Option to take pictures
  • Flip screen
  • Playback mode
  • Disk -No memory card
By having a disk, this could cause some problems because if the disk is not properly installed then the footage will be lost. I know with the camera that you have to finalise the footage which means that you cannot record anything onto the disk after. This means that everything which we film must be right whilst on the camera.

The other features will help us to get the best quality that we can because we will be able to add more lighting if necessary and also try out zooming. The speaker will allow us to hear what we have recorded straight away and also the microphone will help us get a clear sound.

Mood board

This is the mood board which we have created. We have included pictures which link to the conventions of a romance film and what will link to our film. We first have Jeremy Irvine who is portraying our attractive male. He looks well presented but with the ear piercing he could be more of a laid back and scruffy guy. We then have used Nina Dobrev who portrays our attractive female. She have a very casual make up look which is something which we are looking for because it fits in with the school setting. We also have included a jealous looking female, which is a convention in a romance as they will be the person who will try and split them up. We then have a common room as the setting we will be using is a college and so the common room will be featured. The center is a love heart to show that the film is a romance and it is made out of roses to connote love. We also have white roses because the colour white connotes purity and innocence which is what the female is. We then have 2 other possible settings which are a park and a London setting. These are both well known to the audience so that they can relate. These are also popular settings within a romance film. Also, we have George Clooney as the strong protective dad for the female. This is a typical feature which is often found in romance films. Lastly, we have people holding hands to connote love and passion. This is always shown in romance films because holding hands is something every couple does and so the audience can relate.

Update on interview

Bronte Skey

Bronte will be good for this role because she has had a wide range of acting experiences from school productions to being on stage. This shows that she is a good actress and can be our main protagonist in the opening film. Bronte has participated in many acting opportunities such as being a big part in a school production. She has always had an interest in acting and so we thought that she would a good part to play in our film. Bronte has also been a part of an acting group which she has done alongside school. This shows that she is a reliable person and suitable for our role.

soundtrack ideas

We have looked at different soundtracks which could possibly be played in the background of our opening 2 minutes. We researched different types of music which could compliment the voice over as the opening is being shown. We had to look into non- copy righted music, for our opening. When choosing possible soundtracks we had different filters that we could choose from, which could make up our soundtrack. There was a variety of choices of mood and genre, and option of different tempos. For our own opening scene we need at least a soundtracks for our opening, as we will be need it for the journey of the protagonist going to school, and one to be playing over the background for most of the opening before starting the dialogue. The website that we used to find the non-diegetic music, is http://audionautix.com/index.php

music.png (1440×860)

When looking into different soundtracks, we decide to stick with the theme of acoustic, but add other elements which would suit our genre of film, of being a romantic film. From previous analysis we have looked into different soundtracks for the romance genre. From majority, we found out that a lot of recent romance film would usually have a calm, guitar(acoustic) tone to the sound track which compliments the either the protagonist or the location of the opening scene. The soundtrack is important within a romance film because it allows to set the atmosphere of the scene and its gives the audience and obvious indication that it is a romance film.

When using this website, the website gave us a different option , which we could choose from, which would create or pick as suitable sound based on our choices of mood and genre and the tempo of the music. The genre we specially looked into was acoustic because we want to stay with the codes and convention of a romance film, and to make sure the audience identify that our film genre through the soundtrack, as this is an important feature as it will be one of the features to recognize the genre of the film.

When choosing our soundtrack we decided to use options for genre as acoustic, to give the setting a calming atmosphere to start off with. The moods that we have chosen for our soundtrack were calming, relaxed, uplifting. We have used chosen these because we wanted the soundtrack to reflect calming atmosphere, but have and fresh look as this will relate to the protagonist first day in school/college. we
then chose the tempo that we wanted to associate with our soundtrack, and chose the meduim tempo for the sound track, because we wanted a sound track which would suit the traveling of the protagonist, so it will go with the traveling of the protagonist, which will them compliment the voice over.

1. Landras dream

http://audionautix.com/~audion/Music/LandrasDream.mp3

After choosing our options for our possible soundtrack, the website gave us some selected soundtracks which fitted towards what we are expecting in our soundtrack, from the options that we had chosen from. The first soundtrack which we were given was called landras dream. this could be a good soundtrack to use, because it would allow the audience to show mood of the protagonist first day at college, so it does compliment the traveling or journey to college. However this could be a bit more up beat, and may not reflect the female protagonist emotions.

2. Second nature
http://audionautix.com/~audion/Music/SecondNature.mp3

This is another soundtrack that we have chosen , which could be possible soundtrack that we could use, which will be played over the top of the opening whilst it is playing. This would be a good soundtrack to use because as the mood and atmosphere of the soundtrack would suit the personality of the female protagonist, making her journey to school, the soundtrack also reflects the protagonist attitude towards her first day, and this will show a clear indication to the audience of the protagonists thoughts, which will compliment the voice over.

3. Redwood trail

http://audionautix.com/~audion/Music/RedwoodTrail.mp3

This is another soundtrack that we were given after choosing what aspects we wanted with our soundtrack. This could be a good soundtrack to use, because its calming and i would think it would work well with the journey scene to school, the soundtrack also has a slight turn, which could also be used when the two protagonists meet. however this soundtrack doesn't reflect the mood or attitude of the female protagonist.

Day 1 of filming

During this day of filming, we managed to get the consent from the actors which we did not interview so that we could film them. This included the groups in the classroom and also the male protagonist.

We then began to film the classroom footage. This included Bronte, our female protagonist, walking into the classroom. We showed this through match on action and also a medium shot, keeping into the 180 degree rule. However, we needed the footage of the meet up between the female protagonist and her friend, so that we could get an idea if they were walking in together. This will be done in the second day of filming. We have also filmed the conversation between the female protagonist and her friend. We used a shot reverse shot and also the rule of thirds. We have done this so that it show the two characters talking to each other but in an effective way. The lighting for this scene was good because you could clearly see each character due to the natural classroom lighting. We also put extra concealer to hide the imperfections on Bronte's skin so that the camera would pick up on the flawless skin. We also filmed Oliver, our male protagonist, entering the wrong classroom and this is the first time they realise that they are in the same school.

We then went outside school where we filmed Bronte walking down the road which proved to be difficult because we kept on getting other people behind. We then called Oliver so that he could come and do his footage. We made them stand on the opposite side of the road where we got the to look at each other. We filmed Oliver first where he looked at Bronte across the road. We the filmed Bronte doing the same. It was difficult to work out the 180 degree rule and so this took us a few tries. We had to also make sure we left enough time so that the voice over will fit in with the time of her walking.

We then walked back into school where we asked the lady on reception if it was okay to use the sign in book and to film at the front desk. She agreed and so we filmed Bronte walking into school. We then decided to use a close up where we filmed Bronte signing in. She then suggested that she looked at some posters on the wall so she is taking the new surrounding in. We liked this idea and so decided to use it. We then filmed Bronte walking down the hallway. This took multiple times because children kept walking past and getting into shot. We then filmed a high angle shot of Bronte walking up some stairs to make her look vulnerable. This is where we stopped because we ran out of time as it was lunch and so we kept on getting other school children which we did not want.

Making opening titles and production line

For our opening two minutes, we have created the production line for our film. We have used photoshop to help us achieve the final product. We have chosen to use a black background so that the writing stands out. We have also gone for a really pale blue because the line is called 'cloud productions' so the blue connotes the sky.
We tried out different fonts and styles and found that Nueva std font worked the best. We looked at this first and decided that we needed an image to go with the the production. This is what we have come up with. I really like this design because the white which is smudged makes it look like it is a cloud. We have also changed the positioning of the words because we found that having it placed there would make the audience notice it more. This is because they will see the image and then look directly to the production line. I think that the writing could of been a darker blue because it will connote the sky better, however I am still pleased with the final product.

Here is our film titles for our opening two minutes. We have used a black background again because there is no pictures and we wanted the titles to stand out. We have linked this back with the previous analysis as a lot of the openings to a romance start off with a black background. We have also decided to use white to connote innocence and purity and also red to show romance and love. We have chosen the title because it links to an event in the film for the audience to reflect on. 'Locket' is used in red and also in italics because it is the main noun in the film. This will also allow the audience to understand what the film is about but it does not give to much away. This will engage the audience because they will want to see how the locket is lost. The use of 'locket' is also an enigma code because the audience will want to know more about the locket so therefore will want to watch the film. This also links to my analysis of 'Love Actually' because of the idea with the key word in a different colour.

Tutorials which we might use

Here are some make up tutorials which we might use for the female protagonist and for her friend. We will want something that is casual and suitable for collage. We have found all of these tutorials on YouTube.

Tutorial one:

This is a good tutorial which we could use because the make up is natural but also looks like there was effort made. There is a slight shimmer on the eyelids which would look really pretty. The lips are the same shade as the lips so it makes it seem more natural. The only thing I would change in this tutorial is the pink shade of blush because I think that this looks to heavy for an everyday school make up.

Tutorial two:

This tutorial is good because the make up is natural and looks good for school make up. I would apply the foundation with a make up brush because I think that this makes the base more natural. The lip colour is similar so that it keeps it looking more natural. I would not use highlighter because I think this will become to heavy and look to much for school.

Setting for our film

The setting which we will start off with is my house where we will follow the protagonist on her way to school. We will then walk down a hill still following her journey. We will then approach a bus stop where it will be a slightly busier setting so that the audience begins to see the modern town. We will then go down the road leading to our school and enter our sixth form common room. This will be effective because the audience will be able to relate. We will then use a classroom where the film will end.

These are some pictures which we will use as the classroom setting. This is a well lit area so the camera we use for filming will also pick this up. The chairs will be turned around to make it seem like groups of people are there talking to each other. This will help the create the school and classroom atmosphere. The classroom will also have small groups in where we will get their consent for us to film them.

We went onto google images and found one of our locations which we will be filming in. We chose to use Dilston road because we are going to come rounf the corner with the white gates to introduce the female protagonist, and this is where we will start to follow the female protagonist as she will enter the school, down this pavement we will introduce the male protagonist as well asthey will have their fist glance at each other which the voice over will compliment. The lighting shown on google might not match to when we film it due to the natural lighting and the weather. During the film, we would possible have a bit of extra lighting which comes with the camera.

Voice over analysis

The fault in our stars
The voice over shown in the fault in our stars, has been spoken by the female protagonist. Her voice seems very lonely because of the tone of it. The voice over for this film, allows the audience to find out more about the protagonist and her personality, and it also gives the audience an insight of what her life is like and what she focuses on and shows some of her likes and dislikes.

The holiday
The voice over immediately starts off with the female protagonist where she is  talking about her love life, and it seem as if she is talking directly to the audience because she is using "You" The tone of voice when she is talking sound as if she is desperate for love and talks about what could be the male protagonist. Also, she sounds quite desperate because of her tone of voice increasing through the opening as the events show that they are both present at the same party.

For our opening 2 minute, we will include a female protagonist as the voice over, talking about her past story, and what she does on an everyday life where she will be talking directly towards the audience by using "you", as this is really common in most romance film, as they get them involved in the film and into there lives. The voice over will also introduce who the female protagonist is, so giving the audience an idea of who the protagonist is on a more personal level.

Analysing opening titles

The opening titles for the fault in our stars, gives an introduction to the film. The font of the title has been shown as using coloured chalk on a black background. The use of a chalk board suggests the innocent because of past teaching experience. The handwritten chalk text may link to the genre of a romance film, because the statement "The fault in our stars" may refer to a couple that may have got together unexpectedly. The colours used in the title are blue and white. The effect of using the colour white in the font is that it symbolizes innocence and this has been shown through the text, as it may refer to the protagonist, feelings and emotions, and this could give an idea of there personality. The colour blue is effective as it highlights the two important words "fault" "stars" which emphasizes these points which are key within the film,

The opening titles for the film Endless love, gives an immediate introduction to the film, so that the audience are familiar with what they are watching. The Title has two different fonts, 'Endless' the font used there is called Trebuchet MS. The effect of using that font is that it gives a modern look to the title, as this is may show that it could be based on modern day relationship, this would then mean that the audience can relate better. The font used for the word 'Love' is called Arial, and it has been highlight in bold. The effect of using this font is that the bold text emphasizes the what could the story line of the film. The effect of using white is that it could represent innocence. This is effective because it could could link to a a perspective of what love is.

The Font used for the title for the note book is Times new roman, this is effective because it seems to be an old fashion font which tells the audience that the film connects to the protagonists past. The colour of the font used is white, which represents innocence. The background which complements the text is showing a sunset, which has a red tone and there is a man on a boat. The effect of using red is that it connotes passion and love.

What we will include is that the opening titles should have a black ground as it something that has come up in most recent films and the title will have a modern style text, as our film would appeal a younger audience, due to the events that will be shown in the film, for example a college day with students. The possible colour that could be use for the title is  white, as it could show innocence or red to show love. However we can do both where it will show innocence and love.

Analysis of auidence questionnaire

We asked people about the genre romance films, and asking about different conventions within a that genre, we also asked about there interest as well.

From the questionnaire we found out that the age range that watch romance films is mainly the 15-19, this links to a typically convention that around this age these types of people tend watch romance films. The reason behind this could be that the content shown within a romance film may relate to them, as the some of the events that occur, may relate to them, so for example relationships and what they go through, involving a couple, also the problems that they go though, may also relate to real life couples and there relationships and watching these types of films, could give a solutions to different problems that certain relationships go through. Romance films also give the audience set expectations on how relationships and certain events in society should be, people may have certain expectations within relationships, from watching theses genre of films, which they want to happen in real life.
We also asked about what possible settings they would expect in a romance film or to an opening scene, and most for these responses were either as street, park, school/college. These were most popular because from the questionnaire these came up most frequently. The reason behind this could be that romantic films are mostly set in these locations, and its were couple will usually spend time or will have most for the scenes together in those locations. This also could give us an idea of what type of location we should set our opening scene on. The most common places were the park or a school/college. so this will be considered when choosing a location for our opening. Also form the questionnaire we asked what there favourite romance movie was, and based on there choice we got a selection and considering what they include and how that links to the codes and convention of a romance and so have links with them as well.
We asked the public about what they expect the male and female protagonist's personality, to be like. For the female protagonist we found out that typically they should come across as innocent, flirtatious, friendly and cute. These all should be considered as the audience would expect this type of personality from the female protagonist, so this may be from there experience, as they may have watched previous romance films and should expect these features of the personality from them. For the male protagonist, the public decided that his personality should confident, flirtatious and friendly. This will be considered when choosing cast and how they should act during the opening scene.
We asked the public about what types of music do they expect to hear in the opening scene pf a romance film, and most of the responses came out with majority saying they would prefer to hear a guitar acoustic, or something soft and gentle. The reason behind this could be that typically in an opening we would usually hear something that is relaxing, but yet introduces the male and female protagonist, or have something that connotes love and relationships. So when choosing music which will be non copy righted music we will consider these aspects when choosing music to put in the background of our opening.
Lastly we asked about what should be expected in an opening. The most popular response was having a voice over and and opening to the setting, and introduction of the protagonists. These are typically shown in a romance and film and should be included, as these are expectations which the audience want to see when watching a romance film. So these will be included in our opening scene so that it fits the codes and conventions of a romance film, and to fulfill the audiences expectations.

Script

We have chosen to start with a monologue which will be a voice over. Then we will have a small section of dialogue. This is what the female protagonist is going to be saying:

Leola: You might think I'm a little dressed up for going to sixth form. In reality, its my first day. I'm Leola. An average 17 year old. Well. I say average. I don't get invited to parties. When I do, it’s always me sat in the corner, trying to get involved but really, just wanting to go home. I have always been the outsider with my dad's job changing what feels like every week, it means I have new schools to go to all the time. Once I start getting settled, I pack up and move yet again. That's why I'm still single. Never had a boyfriend because I don't want to get too attached. So here I am. A not so average 17 year old waiting for the bus. I mean.....

She looks across the road to notice an attractive male. He notices her back but carries on walking.

(The film carries on with Leola's journey to sixth form)

Leola: (Under her breath) this place is a dump.

Miranda: (bubbly) Hi. My name is Miranda! Are you new?

Leola: Yeah.

Miranda: Well let me show you around. What's your first lesson?

Leola: English.

Miranda: Snap! Come on. I’ll show you.

Leola: Okay....

(Walking down the corridor)

Miranda: mimes a conversation

(In the classroom)

Miranda: Come and sit next to me.

Leola: Thanks.

(Leola looks towards the door)

Miranda: That's Alex. Every girls dream.

Leola: Oh...

(Alex notices her and smirks. They both turn away)

(Miranda waves at him and he waves back)

Leola: Oh. You know him?

New pitch idea

In our opening two minutes, there will be a female protagonist, a male protagonist and their friends. The female protagonist is making her way to her new school where it is her first day. She spots a man across the road and they both glance at each other. There will be a scene at the bus stop where they glance at each other again. Then once the girl gets off the bus, she walks into her collage. She then sits down where she attracts new people to her. She already knows one person in her new school and she brings over a small group of people to meet her. They then head of to class where the male protagonist is sitting at the front. The female protagonist joins her friend at the back of the classroom where she notices him looking back at her. Once he notices that she saw him he immediately turns back around to face the front. The male protagonist hides his emotions towards the girl.

Throughout the rest of the film, the two get paired together for a presentation where they quickly become close. There is a group of girls which spread rumours around that they are together which causes him to become disgusted, acting like he doesn't like her. This causes her to become upset because she thought that he liked her. They stop talking until he comes to her and tells her his true feelings.

During the opening, there will be a voice over which describes the female protagonist and how she is feeling on her first day. There will be a small section of dialogue between the female protagonist and her friend. When they are in class the voice over returns. The voice over is effective because it will be like the female protagonist is talking directly to the audience. The audience will gain a sense of the characteristics and personality of the female protagonists.

Some props which we are going to use is:
  • A school bag
  • A bus
  • A bus stop
  • A sixth form collage
  • Books and folder
The possible settings which we plan on using is a street which is quiet, this could be as she is leaving her house in the morning on her way to school. She then arrives at the bus stop where she sees the male protagonist. Once she is off the bus, she walks down another street and enters her collage. We will be using Therfield Sixth Form for the collage because we both attend here and is the best option for us. We will then need a classroom where the male protagonist will sit at the front and the female protagonist is at the back.

The possible camera angles that we will be using are a variety of close ups of the two protagonist, this allow the audience to be introduce the appearance of the character, and also be using these close ups will also show the protagonist facial expressions. Medium shots will be shown of the protagonist, and the location of the opening, so that the audience can see where the setting of the film is. long shot of the bus stop scene, we will also have shot reverse shot of the protagonist looking at each other. there will more camera angles and they will be listed in the post called 'Shot list'

Update on our pitch

Having considered the idea with the phone and text messages, we have decided that this would not be affective in the way we originally wanted it to be. Instead, we have decided that we will use a collage scene to show that she is the new girl at school who attracts attention from the male protagonist. We will do this because in our audience questionnaire the majority age was between 15-19 therefore meaning they are all in school. They would be able to relate the film more this way.

The fault in our stars analysis

The Fault In Our Stars

In this opening scene, we are introduced to the female protagonist of the film. It starts when she is laying down on the floor and with a close up shot of her face. This suggests that she is the protagonist in the film because the audience is getting to know the character. It then goes into scenes from her childhood so that the audience becomes more connected to her as the character. The scenes are mainly at a hospital suggesting that she is ill. This could also connect the audience as they will start to feel heart-rending towards her as the character is a young child. Also, the hospital setting may engage the audience because everyone has been to hospital and so will feel some sort of connection towards her. With using a child, the audience will see her as vulnerable because she is powerless as she cant do anything to stop her cancer spreading.

The only sound in this opening is the voice over of the female protagonist. She is telling the audience about her condition and how it started. She also involves the audience by using terms such as 'you' suggesting that she is personally directing the audience making them feel more engaged to the film. This is a good way of involving the audience because they will feel like she is talking to them and not to anyone else. There is no other sound in the opening two minutes suggesting that she wants people to listen to her story and not get distracted. I think a voice over is a good way to start because the audience is immediately introduced to the character and gains a sense of what they are like. They will also become more engaged as they will want to listen to what the character is like.

There is not many conventions which tells the audience the genre of the film at the beginning of the film because you would not expect a terminally ill teenager as the female protagonist in a romance film. However, as she is telling the audience her childhood story it suggests that it is a romance film because the audience is getting to know her. Also, most romance films start off with a voice over and so The Fault In Our Stars follows this clique. There are slight things which tell us that this is a romance film. Some being the lighting and costumes. The lighting in this opening is quite light suggesting a happy environment but as she has a terminal illness, there is some dark lighting. The costumes also suggest that this a romance film because she is always dressed casually but also feminine. This fits in with the stereotypical teenager by saying that they are dressed casually so that they are laid back. There is no other character in the opening so she could be quite lonely as she has nobody but her parents around her.

This particular film is something which attracts me because I like how you have to wait to find out what the genre of the film is. I feel like I am more engaged into the film if I do not know the genre because I will want to find out, This is something that I will look at when it comes to filming our opening two minutes because the audience will become immediately engaged into the film. By using a voice over, the character is introduced and will usually carry some story of their life to tell. They will also include pronouns such as 'you' so that the audience will feel involved in the film as they will be addressed personally. The Fault In Our Stars is only an example of a film which starts off like this. Many romance films will usually start with a voice over because the character is immediately introduced into the film. Another convention of a romance film is that they will include a title which is usually red or pink to connote love or romance. They will also be bubbly to show that it is a happy film and possibly a romantic comedy.

Certificate research

Universal

This certificate represents, that the film will not contain nothing that will not harm or offended them. Some of these types of films with this type of certificate would appeal mostly to children aged between four years and over as well as some of the content will not scare or harm them in any way.

'PG' (parental guidance)

Parental guidance certificates are for general viewing, however some of the scenes might not be suitable for young children. PG films shouldn't affect children around the age of eight or older.

12A

12A certificate films, are aimed at children who are under 12, but must have parental guidance to watch the film. However these are not aimed at children under 12, but parents should read the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) for guidance when choosing a film under this category, to tell them if the film is about violence, type of language, sex and horror.

12A AS LIVE
This type of certificate would be provided for the cinema exhibition, to show the information provided by the distributer, without any material being view within the exhibition. These types of films would be suitable for 12 years and over, no one under this age can see a '12A AS LIVE' presentation, unless they have parental guidance.

This type of certificate, which would be aimed for people aged 15 and above, and no one under this age can see this type of certificate of a film at the cinema.

Questionnaire for actors

Questionnaire for the actors

We have planned a questionnaire for the actors who have read our film pitch to answer to gain more knowledge into their past experience and where they get their inspiration from.

  1. Why would you be good for this role?

  2. What acting experience have you had that will help you with this role?

  3. Have you considered how you could show the character successfully through your body language and voice?

  4. Who is favourite actor? Why?

  5. In a romance film, what characteristics would you expect from the protagonist?
These were the questions which we asked both actors so that we would know what their acting capabilities are. The answers are on the post called "interviewing cast for our opening two minutes"

Target Audience and Profiling

Target Audience of Romance

The target audience for a romance film would be mainly female audience in the age range of 15-30 as this will appeal to those who haven't found love as they can feel that there is that person out there. Also, they might also feel that they can relate to the film more as the certificate is usually 12-15 and so the film will usually include characters of around the teenager and young adults years.

In this example of 'The fault in our stars' the majority of people who went to see the film were between the ages of 15-24. This suggests that as the film has characters that are around the ages of 17 the audience can relate to the film. The audience may have people older than this but because the film is based on a teenage book, the film would have a similar rating from the film.

The females may be more attracted to the romance genre because the film will usually include an attractive male character of which he is a very famous actor. The main reason the female audience will prefer romance over any other genre is because they feel they can connect to it more than what men will. They may watch the film at a lonely time of the year as they will see that love will happen to them at some point. Also, when a couple break up, the woman will usually tend to watch a romance film as they will be reasured that there is someone better to find.
