Action genre

Codes and Conventions of an action film
  • Explosions
  • Fighting
  • 12/15 certificate
  • Usually fiction
  • Fast paced editing
  • Recognisable villian
  • Dramatic non-diegetic sound to emphasise a situation
  • Includes CGI - Computer Generated Image
  • A predictable chain of events
  • Weaponry
  • Modern locations
  • Busy setting
  • Stunts
  • Major Hollywood studio
  • A love interest - usually told mid-film
  • Enigma - puzzles to solve throughout
  • High production line - have the money to create features including CGI
  • Characters start with smart clothes which get scruffy to show the situations that they have been in
  • Camera angles include, birds eye view, close ups, medium shots, over the shoulder shots and extreme close ups
  • The antagonist is usually not recognisable in the beginning

Cliches in action movies
  • An impromtu emergency surgery
  • Suicidal mission
  • Ninja's running up the wall
  • Men rappel down steep hills, the side of the building and are usually only left with a scratch
  • Some characters have horns on their heads
  • Nuclear weapons
  • An untrustworthy hunchbacks
  • A small group of men which one will not be on a mission and betray the others and the leader of the group will die
  • The protagonist will usually be backstabbed by a rival or enemy
  • The antagonist will be masked or unidentified until the midpoint of the film
  • Leap away from explosions
